Author Katie J. Trent is a leader in the Christian homeschool community, outside of Phoenix, AZ. She draws on a wealth of knowledge and experience from over a decade of counseling, ministry, and church planting in order to equip women to grow their faith, strengthen their families, and simplify their homeschool journeys.
Here’s my review of Dishing Up Devotions:
Dishing Up Devotions includes 36 devotions and accompanying activities, one for each week of the school year. Each chapter includes a devotion based on a particular character trait, a Bible verse, a prayer, an affirmation, a family activity and a baking recipe.
I must say, I expected the devotional portions to be geared more towards a family devotion that I would read with the kids. But the devotions are definitely intended for mom to read on her own. The activities and recipes however, are meant to include the kids. They tie in the main concept of the devotional.
I am not a homeschool mom, but I feel like the concepts addressed in the book can easily apply to any mom who wants to connect with her kids and build the faith of her children. And if you ARE a homeschool mom, this book will be especially encouraging for you!
The recipes are simple and delicious! Most are gluten free, but regular flour can be substituted. The idea is to have the kids do the baking activity with you while you talk about the character trait and application for that week. The recipes are loosely tied with the biblical lesson for the week.
Katie’s style of writing is very laid back and personal, sharing many stories from her own experiences of parenting and homeschooling.
The layout of the book is delightful, with full-color images of each baked treat as well as attractive design elements.
I’d definitely recommend this book to any mom who loves kids, loves Jesus, and loves to bake!
(Or, any mom who is exhausted by her kids, desperately needs Jesus, and tolerates baking in order to reward herself with sweets when the kids aren’t looking. 🙂
