The following are some of the questions that Michele and I discussed during our interview!

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PRENATAL YOGA CLASSES?

Prenatal yoga classes can benefit your body, mind and soul.  Pregnancy Yoga will help you to cultivate self-awareness and to focus on your pregnancy in a deeper way.  It will help you to develop proper breathing and relaxation techniques for easier and more comfortable labor.  The benefits of doing yoga include:

  • Relief of tension in lower back, hips, chest, upper back, neck and shoulders
  • Decrease of nausea, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches and leg cramping
  • Improved sleep and reduced stress & anxiety
  • Increased strength, flexibility and endurance of muscles needed for childbirth.
  • Developing an emotional connection with your baby.
  • Practicing the skill of mindfulness – being present in the present moment while tuning out distractions.

Another benefit of prenatal yoga classes is the social aspect.  You will be part of a community of pregnant women who are all experiencing similar circumstances.  As a part of a prenatal yoga class, you will find the encouragement and support that you need to thrive on your pregnancy journey.

WHY SHOULD I TAKE A PRENATAL YOGA CLASS INSTEAD OF A REGULAR YOGA CLASS?

As a mom-to-be, you will be guided through mediation, breathing and movement specialized for the prenatal body and mind.  Designed to both nurture and challenge expectant mamas, prenatal yoga inspires trust in the birthing journey while providing an open community to discuss what you are experiencing.  You will benefit from much needed relaxation, while strengthening the muscles that support the baby during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period.  Prenatal yoga classes are designed specifically for pregnant women and are the safest way to take a yoga class when you are pregnant.  It is important for you to look for classes that are taught by a certified prenatal yoga instructor, as they are familiar with the specific poses to avoid and which ones to focus on.  If you have never practiced yoga or have practiced very little before your pregnancy, you should practice only prenatal yoga while pregnant.  If you already have a strong yoga practice before pregnancy, you may be able to continue a fairly vigorous practice, with modifications.  During the first trimester, both beginning and experienced yogis should do a gentle practice, or possibly none at all if you have a history of miscarriage.

ARE THERE BENEFITS OF PRACTICING YOGA AFTER GIVING BIRTH?

Yoga is a great way to relax, reduce stress and calm the body and mind.  Yoga will gently and slowly exercise the muscles and joints back to their original strength along with gradually boosting core strength and stamina.  Generally, it is recommended that you wait about six weeks to start exercising after you have given birth; eight weeks if you have had a cesarean.

WHAT ARE SOME COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT PRENATAL YOGA?

You do not need to be flexible.  You will be able to use modifications.  You do not need to be calm or “good” at yoga or know what you are doing.  I always encourage students:  “Start where you are right now and listen to your body.”  It’s not the aesthetics of the poses that’s important, but how the poses feel in the targeted area that is important.  Practicing yoga, breath work and mindfulness will not guarantee an easy birth, or a smooth transition into motherhood.  However, the practice of yoga will empower you as a pregnant woman to make the most of your vast inner resources while pregnant as well as during and after the birth of your baby.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB, MICHELE?

I am passionate about nurturing and empowering the mind and body of moms-to-be through yoga, wellness, and education.  I love seeing a class full of pregnant women learning to enjoy their pregnancies and build a deeper intimacy with their own body and baby.  It’s a lot of fun to stay connected with the women even after the class is over.  It’s so rewarding when new moms send me pictures of their baby and share their birth stories with me.

WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE EXPECTING MOMS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR CLASSES?

I believe that the intention of taking prenatal yoga classes is for you to connect to your growing baby and to discover your own body wisdom.  An integral aspect of the practice is the cultivation of conscious relaxation.  At the end of each class, we have a time of relaxation and meditation where we practice the skill of mindfulness, of focusing on the present.  Pregnancy can be a roller coaster of emotions, and I want you to learn to be self aware in the midst of all that you are feeling.  While it’s important to have a vision for how your birth will go, it’s equally important to know that things do not always go as planned.  During our prenatal yoga classes, we will practice letting go of expectations and focusing on what is true right now.  I believe pregnancy is not only a destination, but also a journey – a time to savor the experience of having a life growing inside you.  I want to help you to thrive during this exciting time.
