Next to my newborn sessions, my most popular portrait session is a one-year cake smash! The first twelve months of life for a baby are so full of changes. It’s a lot of fun to see how baby has grown from a teeny tiny newborn into an almost-toddler! For those of you who have a one year old, it may not come as a surprise that my one-year cake smash sessions are often the most challenging! I never quite know what to expect from these sweet 12 month old clients. They may be crawling, standing, and even walking at this age. It’s always an adventure!
I met little Miss Mia for the first time at her one-year cake smash session. She definitely gave us a run for the money! Mom, Grandma and I all got a pretty good workout trying to keep up with her. I do have a few tricks up my sleeve to try to keep very mobile babies a little more contained… including boxes, bowls, and chairs. I also use a variety of distraction techniques such as snacks, toys, and occasionally even an iphone! Whatever it takes to keep baby entertained and happy!
Be sure to check out the shot below with the hand mirror. This shot was actually a composite! In the original image, Mia had a cell phone in her hand. I really wanted to use the image, so I used some photoshop magic and I swapped out the cell phone for a hand mirror instead. Mom loved it!
I really loved the whole set-up for this session… vintage lace, pearls and flowers were in abundance. I even got to try out a few of the floral bonnets I had made!
We saved the best for last – the cake of course! Unfortunately, Mia wasn’t so sure she liked the cake. As you can see by her face in the last image below! 🙂
